So, you've got a concrete driveway. And it's got these... gaps. Are they supposed to be there? Yep. Should you fill them? Absolutely. Here's the lowdown on why those joints exist and how to seal them up properly, without getting a headache.

A side-by-side comparison of a clean, professionally sealed concrete driveway joint and an unsealed joint filled with dirt and weeds.

Why Bother Sealing Those Gaps?

Concrete can actually move. It expands in the heat and shrinks in the cold. Those gaps, or joints, are there on purpose to give the concrete room to breathe without cracking itself to pieces.

Meet the Joints

You'll likely see two kinds of joints. Expansion joints are the big, deep gaps, often between your driveway and the garage floor. They handle the major movements of the whole slab.

Control joints are the shallower lines cut into the surface. They're basically pre-planned cracks, encouraging the concrete to crack in a nice, straight line where you want it to, instead of randomly across the middle.

What Happens if You Don't Seal Them?

An empty joint is a welcome mat for trouble. Water gets in and washes away the gravel and dirt packed underneath your driveway. This creates empty pockets, and soon enough, the heavy concrete slabs sink and crack.

A severely cracked and uneven concrete driveway caused by water damage and frost heave from unsealed joints.

In cold climates, it's even worse. Water in the soil freezes, expands with incredible force (a thing called "frost heave"), and pushes your driveway up from below. This causes massive cracks and uneven surfaces.

Unsealed joints also collect dirt, which is a perfect home for weeds. Their roots can slowly wedge the concrete apart. Sealing the joints stops all of this before it starts.

Picking Your Goo: Sealant Types

The goal is to fill the joint with something that’s both waterproof and flexible. This is key. You need a sealant that can stretch and squish as the concrete moves.

Crucial Mistake to Avoid: Never use hard, inflexible fillers like mortar, grout, or wood in your driveway joints. Concrete needs to move, and these materials will crack and fail. Always use a flexible sealant designed for concrete.

Don't just stuff any old thing in there. Using a hard filler like mortar, grout, or even a piece of wood is a classic mistake. They can't flex, so they'll just crack and fall apart, leaving you back at square one.
